Good News – we have just launched the flood warden scheme in the Stroud District! GRCC are working with Stroud District Council to coordinate their flood warden scheme.
We are currently trying to recruit as many flood wardens across the district as possible. By having flood wardens in your local area, you can help boost community resilience and local preparedness.
Flood risk in the UK is increasing, both from river (fluvial) flooding and surface water, so it is more important than ever to help and protect communities.
The following points give a brief description of the Flood Warden Role:
- Communicate between authorities and communities on flooding matters
- Raise awareness of flooding and promote self-help
- Work closely with parish/town councils
- Report on flooding events
- Monitor local watercourses
- Feedback any clearance work
- Contribute to Town/Parish council’s Community Emergency Plans
- Help identify flood hotspots
- Log events and actions taken during a flood
Full training and support is provided by GRCC in partnership with Stroud District Council.
If you know anybody in your area that would be interested in this exciting opportunity to help protect your community, please get in touch with me at lucye@grcc.org.uk, or call 07450 772145 for more information. We are looking to run induction and training sessions for the wardens in late autumn.

A message from Stroud District Council:
Information about how protect your home against flooding can be found at https://bluepages.org.uk/ and it is a property owner’s responsibility to protect their property from a flood risk.
If a property owner feels their property is at risk of flooding, the council will encourage the resident to consider ways to protect the property other than sandbags.
However, if you feel that you need sandbags, SDC also has a list of builders merchants which can provide a maximum of 12 empty sandbags from SDC stock free-of-charge at Flooding help – how to protect your home although most charge for sand. Please be aware of opening and closing times.
Stroud District Council can provide a maximum of 12 empty sandbags, free-of-charge, during normal office hours at our Ebley Mill offices and Littlecombe, Dursley depot. Homeowners will need to provide their own sand.
This service closes at 1pm on Tuesday, December 24, and due to the usual Christmas holiday break, will be available again from 8.45am on Thursday, January 2.
