Bisley-with-Lypiatt Parish Council is opposed to the planting of any genetically modified crops, or the deployment of any other type of GMO, within the parish at the present time and would like neighbouring parishes to join in supporting this policy. This decision takes account of the following widely perceived risks.
- The escape of GMOs or their mutations may threaten existing plant and animal life, both wild and cultivated.
- The planting of genetically modified crops, or the deployment of any other type of GMO, is unlikely to be achieved without contamination of neighbouring land or animal populations.
- The consumption of food containing any form of GMO, at high or even low levels, could cause new allergies or other disorders.
This policy will be reviewed if credible and substantiated research clearly shows that all these risks do not exist in either the short or the long term.
